Gap between connections on exhaust. I believe this is the connection between the manifold and the exhaust. Right beside the engine and upstream oxygen sensor in my 2004 pontiac vibe. The other side of this connection has no gap.

The gap is normal. That is a spring loaded ball and seat joint.

How come the other side of this piece is completely joined together flat? Seems odd one side is tightly joined together and this side has a massive gap between

Because somebody tightened that side first or it just may be the angle it's joined. The flange uses springs to hold a flare against a rounded lip. It can rock back and forth and the seal still remains tight.

If you don't feel any puffing leaks with your hands around the joint with the engine running, don't worry about the joint.

I have a P0420 code on my car. I've had it for probably 10k miles or so, lol. Car runs perfect no issues at all but definitely got some noises under the car. One notably being the exhaust heavily vibrates on the first start of the day. Exhaust seems to have a lot of movement on startups every time. Jerks the car a bit. It's a very old car and still runs perfect so I don't really want to invest in a new cat if that's truly the issue. Just kind of running it into the ground until she gives up. I did just replace the upstream sensor yesterday since a code for that popped up. I figured $60 to fix that is cheap and easy to do so why not. Just thinking it's possible I have exhaust leaks idk.

Back up here.

Having a code for an 0/2 sensor does not mean the sensor is bad. That is a reporting sensor and it is reporting what it sees.

Don't blame the exhaust for it shaking around. Blame the engine misfire for that and that could be the likely reason the cat is going bad.

Was P0133 code, slow response. I replaced it and the code went away. When I pulled it out, looked like the original sensor from Toyota lol and it has 232k miles on it. I'm not getting any misfire codes from the car. I only have one code and that's P0420.

I didn't realize you had that many miles. Sensors can get clogged up due to age or because of over rich fuel mixtures. Same goes for the Cat.
