new cat and bad gasket Sign In

my wife has a ford fusion zetec 1.4 when it hit 90k i had the cam belt changed and a bunch of other small work then changed the oil and filters 10k later a month after i found the oil hand gone down by a ltr no leaks on filter or sub confused i just topped it up and took it for its mot witch failed due to cat

i paid another 350 for a new cat plus had just about all the exhaust changed front to back my wife then noticed it had a slight miss fire when idle she could feel it shake every few secs while sitting at the lights so we go back to the shop and are told to just run it for a few weeks to see if improves now its got the new cat etc

so after a month i go back and ask them to look into it and change the spark plugs as its still the same they guy calls me over and shows me the sparks are flooded due to bad gasket seal so i had it replaced he said well i guess thats why the cat failed the mot so i say hang on shes being driving it now for a month with the new cat and the sparks flooded wont the new cat now also be screwed? the shop has said its fine not to be concerned but should she be?

also after i topped up the oil before the leak was fixed it never went down again the month she was running it with the new cat the exhaust didnt show and crazy smoke and apart from the slight miss when idle it sounds as good as the day we brought it

Yes, that is certainly true. Cats don't die , they are killed by poorly running engines. Sounds like he's just blowing you off because he can't figure out the problem.

hi thanks they did find it had a leak and replaced the seal and sparks so it has no problems now but leak was fixed a month after they replaced the cat so i was just concerned that running it for a month with the leak could have damaged the new cat thou the car run fine for that month with no exhaust problems that i could see only the slight miss when idle the oil level didnt drop again thou the sparks were already flooded by this point

You're probably OK.
