Jeep Liberty sport 3.7 2005 140,000 The car was sitting for around a year and half. Fixed somethings, and then the check engine light came on and I'm trying to get it to pass emissions. I got p0420 and p0430 errors which from what I see this means either O2 sensor issue or a catalytic converter issues. Is there any way to check if its not the catalytic converter without bringing it in or changing the O2 sensors? Thanks!

What things did you fix? Did it have any misfire concerns? Should be P0420 and P0430 right? Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

Yes, P0420 and P0430, my bad. Before it started sitting it had some overheating issues. So I went ahead and changed its battery since the battery was very very very dead. I changed the oil, added coolant , and steering fluid. The oil change and coolant took care of the overheating it seems. Then I put some seafoam in the tank since white smoke was coming out the exhaust. As of now the only real issue I can see is the engine light. No mis firing from what I can tell.

Overheating and white smoke out the exhaust? That is a clear sign of coolant getting into the combustion chamber through a blown head gasket or possible intake manifold leak. That coolant entering the exhaust will destroy the converters in very short order. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Driving it's not a problem unless they get further restricted but selling it may cause some issues, depending on the laws in your state and the degree of conscience you have.

Hey this may be bit of dumb question but how hard is it to replace a catalytic converter? I saw the actually part ranges from 100-300 dollars. Additionally it doesn't seem like a crazy amount of work based on what I've seen from online videos.

You are looking at Universal cats and even they require welding and custom fabrication. If you do ultimately need new converters, go to an exhaust specialty. They will have the best price and most professionally done.

OE one if look up is correct......... That part of that pipe welded in and about $500 wholesale. Fine it showed just the bulging converter for the $100 you would need to cut the old one out precisely with torches or a good cutting tool. Measure pipe and universal one know it will go over good pipe and clamp it. Those don't last for crap if all things are good and if you don't fix the leaking head issue might not last long enough for a sticker if that's all you wanted you will be right back where you are now in no time already said. That metal is usually much harder than say other area of exhaust and doesn't take to welding dissimilar metal no doubt of the cheap one. Tried on a clunker didn't want even brazing it was temp only soon to be a yard thing only wouldn't require one that old at all off road use only. Make up you mind if you want to risk it as a waste or do it all up right and really pass with all problems done if the car is worth crap otherwise should be worth it vs changing out vehicles but only you can decide that. There isn't much "faking" it with this stuff that works never mind legal, T

Why even install new cats if the thing is burning coolant? Doesn't make much sense. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.
