rusted heat shield?

I'm guessing that this picture shows the catalytic converter and heat shield? Well, if so, then it looks like the heat shield has rusted through at one of the bolts. What's it going to take to fix this? Or should I just secure it and leave it? Thanks. Honda CRV, 2005 about 238,000 miles.

Yep, that's the heat shield rusting out. Unless it's rattling and making noise, i'd just leave it alone. If it does start rattling, just tear it off. It's part of the converter so it will be expensive to repair. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

For my next car, what should I have done to prevent this?

I once had a muffler rust through, so when I had it replaced, I spray-painted it. The second one lasted the life of the car. Not a good idea in this case? (I used a special high-temperature spray paint)

Of course not. The Converter can reach temperatures of 2000 degrees and no paint can work. Painting your muffler didn't do anything either. Mufflers rust from the inside out and it is due to normal condensation that the engine creates. The killer of exhaust systems is frequent short trips. Condensation is created at start up of a cold engine but will eventually burn off and the car is driven long enough. If the car isn't drive long enough, the condensation remains inside the system. Better materials are being used in exhaust systems these days and that is why they last longer.

Hard to prevent this stuff. Heat shields are cheaper metals and usually just spot welded on and are a weak link. Mufflers etc should be coated new on outside and better metal used on insides. They usually fail on inside first and by the time you see the outside in trouble they are junk. Painting won't help much from the outside on any I ever did and did. If clever you can fabricate some fix for heat shields that will buy some decent time depending on just how and where. Many are very important and not to be ignored. There may be some repair kits unknown yet to me but would check, T
