Did the mechanic install a pressure gauge and read actual peressure? If so, what was the pressure? If ir is indeed normal, I would look to the oil pressure sending unit as being faulty.

Re: ***OIL PRESSURE LOW** Sign In

How often does it come on? Does it just do it on initial start up, or anytime at idle? If it is just on initial start up, it may just be the sender having crud in it. If it comes on at idle, it could possibly be sender not reading the thinner oil properly. Hard to say for sure without actually testing.

Re: ***OIL PRESSURE LOW** Sign In

Ok...I'm trying to follow this and its kinds confusing..

Start at the beginning...
What exactly happened?
Were you driving along and light came on?..did you just buy the vehicle?
Was oil level ever checked? low?
I see mechanic said oil pressure is normal..
Does it only come on on start up and then go off?
Is it actually a minute or a few secs...which would be normal ..
I am sorry for so many questions, just I am not sure I understand your exact problem...not sure others do either.
Help us..
Please explain again..
Maestro....From the Top...

20/50? Really? That's kinda...heavy aint it? I use that in my wet clutch motorcycles for chrissakes. I'm betting you'll notice and decrease in your gas mileage with that one. At least I always do with the bikes when I use heavier oil.

Re: ***OIL PRESSURE LOW** Sign In

20-50 oil is pretty heavy for automotive use. It will conceal some signs of a worn engine and produce higher oil pressure readings once running but can be slow to get flowing and VERY thick for cold starts. It will effect fuel economy. In general I would leave that to a "last ditch" attempt to get some more life out of an engine in certain circumstances only,
