01 Grand Am, 2.4, 120k. Never had any problems, this morning won't start. It'll crank all day long, just won't catch. I don't know how to check for spark or fuel on this 'modern' motor. Ran fine all day yesterday, always has. I'm baffled. Possibly a timing belt issue? Thanx, Mike

Try looking at this >> http://www.samarins.com/diagnose/index.html .. If the belt really broke it would have a strange cranking sound like no compression which would be so if that was it, T

A 2.4lt doesn’t use a timing belt, it has a chain; most likely not the no start issue; if it was running “normally” the last time driven. As for what has or is going on will take a little more work compared to an engine that has exposed ignition system. To check for spark you’ll need to remove the upper cover that contains the ignition module, ignition coils and spark plug connectors. Once you have that off, you’ll be able to reconnect the cover electrically and then attach ignition wires from the coils distribution box, back to the spark plugs. This is a make shift kind of thing that’ll take some ingenuity on your part. Now you’ll be able to check for a consistent spark coming from both of the different coils. You can only check for spark on one wire at a time from the same coil unless you have the sister wire grounded. If I have lost you it’s time to take the car in and let someone diagnose this for you. If you don’t feel comfortable with the diagnosis, post back with whoever’s recommendations. Dan. Canadian "EH"

Thanx guys! I think that we will call in a pro. 1,000 miles from home a week before Christmas isn't the time to learn how to wrench on this thing. Thanx again, Mike

i had a 2000 grand am that would run one day and not the next. 3 different pros told me fuel pump, i repaced it 3 times. I ran into a toyota mech. that did some side work now and again. he said he saw that problem alot on grand ams. he said all he needed to do is replace the points and coils and it would run fine. he was right. never had that problem again.

Thread started over a month ago. No problem it's searchable for archives. What "points" are you referring to? T
