I've got a manual 2001 Toyota Celica GT with 139,000 miles. It has a recently replaced fuel line and clutch. It has an aftermarket cold air intake and exhaust system. So, a few months ago I noticed acceleration was a little slow. I've been taking it to Tuffy regularly for oil changes, so I decided to take it there for a fuel system cleaning. They also recommended I do a tune up, and said my valve cover gasket is leaking and that my drive belt tensioner is going bad. (I know my valve cover gasket IS for sure leaking.) After the fuel system cleaning, it seemed to get worse. Now there's a hesitation instead of just being slow. It sputters when you try to push the pedal down, and it you push the pedal to the floor it's worse. There's like a good "give" in the middle that normally gives the best acceleration. It doesn't help to stay in lower gears for higher RPMs, and oppositely it doesn't help to change gears and lower RPMs. For the most part, once I get it to 60mph (after a good long time) it will have the most trouble pushing past that. I drive on the highway everyday for work, so this is a big problem and safety hazard. After a while of being at constant 60mph it will randomly clear up, and I can accelerate as normal to whatever I want to be at (75-80). I'd like to try and figure out what exactly is wrong before I just take it into Tuffy and get the work done, since they do charge quite a bit.. Today I cleaned the MAF and the Throttle Body. It seemed to just make it worse, the hesitation and rough run was worse, but I don't know what could have caused it.

Start by getting your codes pulled and post them here. Need the exact numbers, not generic descriptions. DO NOT allow the counter monkeys at Autozone to tell you what is wrong or sell you any parts unless you don't like your money. Codes are the first step here to deciding which direction to go in.

Gets codes as Nick suggested. I worry about this aftermarket "cold air" intake deal junk. At best trickery of the sort doesn't cause instant problems IMO. The concept of cooler air is right but application to real use in the real world doesn't add up. Do all parts to that seal and hook up properly? Guess only that it is cheap stuff and now a problem. If it ever worked properly with that I'd make sure it isn't messed up somewhere. Just a thought, T

Intake has been in there forever with no problems except being a random size. It's fine though. Here are the codes: P0171, PO300, PO301, PO303, PO304 (last four being misfires in 3/4 cylinders). What I've done today: Got the valve cover gasket replaced (not causing the problem but needed to be done nonetheless) Spark plugs replaced Bought a new MAF and am about to install it.
