i have a 2002 Oldsmobile Alero GL Sedan with 82,000 miles on it. it had quit on me for 3 months it would roll over but it would start up. so after 3 months a buddy and i took the sparks plugs out cleanded them and it fired up. the car ran fine and in the past month i drove it from idaho to pennslyvania it got there just fine then in like two days when i got there it quit on me again. so we took it to a mechanic and he told us that it was the computer, and if it quits again to unplug the negative probe on my battery for a few minutes then it should start. so i drove back to idaho just fine then once i got back it quit again and i tryied the battery thing and it didnt work i was wondering if anyone could help me out.

jbet; I'd have to say that you were really lucky to have made it both trips. When you disconnect the battery as stated, you clear all adaptives and KAM (keep alive memory) so the computer has to relearn stratedgies. This puts it into a 'limp home' mode. Fuel economy goes in the toilet, as does drivability. And, you are masking a possible engine damaging problem. Best thing to do at this point is have any stored trouble codes retrieved and post them for us to see. (Don't disconnect the battery any more. Every time you do, it erases the codes).
