I have an 05 Chevrolet Equinox that I purchased new. It now has 167,xxx miles on it. I recently started having issues with it starting. Seems to happen when I drive longer distances and shut the car off. When I get back in the car, and turn the key on, it doesn't start . All the lights on the instrument panel will flash on and off. If I hold the key on long enough, it will usually start. Sometimes it will not start, but if I have someone tap the starter with a hammer, it will start right up. A couple of times when this has happened, the T/C (traction control) light will come on. When this happens, and I do get it started, the car won't go at all. I shut it off, and once started again, it will be fine, but the engine light will stay on for a couple of days. Any idea if I need to replace the starter, or if this could be another issue? Thanks.

It's possible that the starter motor could be failing on you if someone taps the motor while you hold the key and it suddenly takes off. You would have to check power at the starter motor's solenoid (small wire) to see if there is battery voltage when the key is turned. If you have power, but no solenoid activity, more than likely the starter is the problem. If you have no power, you'll have to use a high scan tool to see the request for the starter motor relay to energize on the data stream. The PCM is actually what starts the engine. When you turn the key it's just a request to the PCM. If you see that the PCM is getting a request and enabling the relay. Then check to see if the starter relay clicks. It wouldn't be a bad idea to use a high end scan tool to see if there are any codes being stored in any of the modules in the vehicle. There maybe some C or P codes stored. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.
