I have an 05 expedition with a 5.3l 3v Triton v8 with 129000 miles on it. My problem is that it runs great but it seems to idle rough at times. I noticed the problem when I stopped at a stop sign and had a little jumpiness to the idle. The rpms were not moving around just the overall feel of the idling. I havent tried anything yet because I just noticed the problem and don't really know enough about cars to guessing can anyone help??

Was the RPM dropping lower than it normally stays? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Not that I've seen it seems to idle at around 900 in park and 500 to 550 in drive. The rpm seems to stay there even when it has that little uneasiness to it

No I was keeping an eye on all lights but nothing so far. I've popped the hood with it in park but the motor seems to be running smooth with no strange noises. Kind of puzzling but annoying none the less

If you're not getting a check engine light and the RPMs are holding steady, we really have no direction to go here. I suggest letting a competent tech take a look at it because things are a lot easier to recognize in person.

Thanks anyway if you or anyone else thinks of something that it might be let me hear it. I just got this vehicle and it was almost on empty. When I filled it up I put regular unleaded in it, can that cause something like the problem I'm trying to explain

It's not a matter of thinking of something. We have no starting point. Alright appreciate it I was just curious because I have a dodge ram that ran the same way some time ago and it ran me about $900 for them to tell me that I need to use mid grade instead of regular and it fixed it when I switched but I have more invested in this vehicle and want it done right so I'll make the appointment. Thanks

Expedition just stalled completely when I started it back up I held my foot on the gas and the motor revved up and down several times and then smoothed out but the check engine light came on. I took it to auto zone and they hooked it up to there computer recognized a rich or lean condition on one fuel bank only. What does this mean?

Sorry. The code was po171 and I was told that it may be the mass air Flo sensor so I replaced it. $115.00 later it is still riding rough and I don't really know what to do... I haven't even made my first payment on this yet and already its becoming a headache! What could be the problem?

Stop throwing parts at it. You will just throw money away. Did it also have a PO174? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

I can't say because all they told me is that both codes basically said the same thing and didn't realize till I got home that they only printed out that one but this is what it has on it. Computer recognizes a rich or lean condition on one engine bank only. Probable causes 1. Mass air flow sensor 2. Oxegyn sensor 3. Ignition misfire 4. Fuel injector problem. car still has all the power you could ask for and does not jerk or jump it just has a slight vibration at times

I know what the code means. What i wanted to know is if it set the code for both banks since that one is for bank 1 only. If it did set both codes, then I am reasonably sure what you have is a severe vacuum leak. I see these codes all the time and on a ford, it's nearly always one of the large vacuum lin es that has sucked a hole right through it, usually the PCV line. Listen closely for a hissing sound and follow it to it's source by feeling with your hands and the sound will change when you get close.

After a thorough check the ticket does have po171 and po174 on it but only the one explanation. I did call a man at the shop that I always bring my dodge truck to and SUPRISE without each one of you knowing what the other would say and only going by my brief description you both came up with the same conclusion so fingers crossed I'll check it out tomorrow and let you know what I find out.

Let this be a lesson to you to never let counter monkeys at the parts store tell you what is wrong with your vehicle. You blew good money for a bad diagnosis and replaced a perfectly good part. They are counter monkeys, not mechanics, and its for very good and now obvious reasons.

Just heard from a trusted friend who has been a mechanic owning his own garage for 20 some odd years and so far no vacume leaks. Between that and the fact that I've already put the new mass air flow sensor on it what should I do next?

If I don't have excess to a smoke tester myself and the motor being a Triton its difficult to hear any hissing unless its a bad leak and very loud. is there any other way y'all could recommend me try

You can try spraying some carb cleaner around and listening for engine change but you should be able to hear the hissing.
