1980 firebird differential problem Sign In

Getting ready to put an axle seal in my 80 firebird. When loosening the bolt that locks the keeper pin in the center of the differential in place the bolt broke. If anyone who knows what I'm talking about has any ideas as to how to get it out it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, dl.

That's a real problem! Can you get a straight shot at it with a drill? You'll need the best drill made perhaps carbide and test it on the broken part of the bolt. a center punch will also have to be super hardened metal to make a hole centered for yet again the best grade of screw extractor you can get. If extractor breaks off it's about game over!

Thanks Tom. I dont see how to get a straight shot at it. Comparing a new bolt to the broken one the are only about 2 threasd left on the part in the differential. This seems to be a common occurance although no one has much advice on how to extract it other than drilling it. I'll try an angle drill.

Tom,

Just a little info if you ever run across my problem again. A person told me today that this was commom. Several people actually. One told me that the remaining portion of the screw would probably be loose and to take a small pic and try to turn it back out. I used a dental tool used for scraping and picking at teeth. I was able to succesfully back the screw out this way. Quite relieved to get this good info. Thanks, dl.
