1982 Chevy S10 no spark

1982 Chevy S10 no spark Sign In

1982 Chevy S10, 2.8 liter W/ carb

Just died while driving, and would not restart. Pushed off road and tried to restart- finally successful- ran about 50 feet, has not ran since.

No spark while trying to turn over. All resistance/ voltage tests in s10 book checked okay except pickup coil lead to ground. Book said it should NOT read infinite, but it did, so REPLACED distributor. Still have same problem with rebuilt distributor.

Have discovered that engine does fire ONE time only when turning OFF ignition switch, and seems to do this every time. Any ideas?

Did the black module with wires at each end come with the new distrubutor? Those could do what you are describing,

    Yes, it did... new module and pickup coil- complete.

    hang on a second- it has the module- my old wiring plugs into the module inside the distributor.

Ok: It was now a long time ago I had a rash of those modules go bad on road calls no less without much testing ability on site. It got to the point I'd carry a common one (used) in my tool box! Wires and connections could be the trouble - help memory here - does that dist still use a vacuum advance? Could cause motion on the wires - ding, ding!! Check out those connections as best you can.

Sorry if I'm leading you on a goose chase - just that every one that failed me like your description had to do with that module and or its connections/wiring and no further follow up ever happened??

    The distributor that I have does not have the vacuum advance, it's all electronic- some models of this year do have the vacuum advance, as they gave me the wrong distributor to start with. Anyway, you may be correct about the module, just strange that the old one worked for years, and then I get a new one with the same problem. Well, I'm not sure that the old one fired when turning off the ignition.

Kragen (where I bought the distributor) said they could not test this particular module. I just hate to buy another one and have it not work as well. Maybe I can find another parts place that can test it.

Arggh! I have TWO! - - K-D Portable Ignition boxes model #2632 (couldn't find on the whole web just now so I have them both)Tongue!! With all problems with these things I just used the box and if the vehicle ran it ruled out tons of things.

The GM HEI dist had a plug and this box just plugged in there and by-passed the module but used the car's coil still. If it started I replaced the module - no further testing needed. Cars with coil wire to cap it has a coil wire from the box and you just put in in the dist - uses only cap and rotor and a car will run without much else if key is on for fuel in vehicles with electric fuel pumps. Can't tell you how many vehicles have been driven to my shop with those suckers to fix. It will even start chain saws if you use a separate battery!

I guess you should see if you can get that module tested - I never had anything or specs to test them except for taking one out of a running wreck. This is not something you just peridically replace for preventative maint so I don't know of any limit to life expentancy for them.

Does coil test out Ok? You may have said and I'll lose this post if I click back now. Can you just continuity test wires from ends to ends of plugged in things and see if there's a break?

One last check: With cap off - is the dist rotor turning while cranking engine?
