My car has been making worse noises than it normally does lately. A low growl type noise. And it hasn't been getting as much power as it normally does, it has more trouble climbing hills and stuff.
Well tonight while I was driving the lights got really dim and my stereo turned off and I was barely able to make it home. When I got home it wouldn't start again but the lights seemed to be as bright as normal so it's not the battery.
A couple of people said it sounds like my alternator. Anyone able to diagnose from my story?
Thanks!

With the noise, and the electrical symptoms, I'd take a real hard look/listen to the alternator. With that said, the alternator will make a whining type noise when it's being overworked. But, an alternator bearing will/can make a growling noise. Keep in mind, it doesn't take much amperage to illuminate lamps, but takes a whole lot to energize the starter.

Yup! Take a good look at the alternator and belt. You should have trouble turning the alt cooling fins by hand if tight enough but not too tight.

Noise AND not charging does suggest alternator trouble or belt has a problem on water pump or PS.

Make sure you check the plug on the alternator too. Very common for them to melt up and pigtail ends are available aftermarket for them if so.

If alternator - this one is as easy as they get,
