Ford F-150 1990.
The gas gauge will be at empty, then when i step on the gas it goes all the way up passed the full mark and stays there. Then when i hit the gas again it will go all the way back to empty. never giving me the correct reading. Also when i switch fuel tanks it says my rear tank is passed full and stays there when i know its empty. Any Ideas and if so thank you for your help.

The problem has to be related to the fuel tank selector switch. This unit does all the work. When you're in "front tank mode" the selector switch sends 12 volts to power the electric fuel pump in the front tank. At the same time it connects the fuel gauge sending unit in the front tank to the fuel gauge in the instrument cluster. When you select the rear tank it does the opposite, and hooks up the pump and sending unit in the rear tank.

It sounds like there may be bad contacts within the fuel tank selector switch causing you grief. Most shops can usally can confirm and fix in a short amount of time.

What would I be looking at in prices for that? Is it something I can do myself or should i just take it in? And thanks for your help.
