1993 Nissan Sentra XE Bad ECM?????

Recently I replaced the entire a/c system to get it to work. I had to replace my ECM to fix a missing ground for the system. I bought a used ecm from a junkyard and after installing it the car ran very rough, with lots of mini-backfiring and a drastic decrease in mileage. The gears also shift very roughly, sometimes staying in 3rd even doing 65-70 mph until I let up and slow down about 5 -10 mph when it then shifts. Is the problem with the computer or is it something else?

When I put in the origional the car acts normal, with some slight rough gear shifting, but the a/c does not work. I should have said that the car stutters during all gears and pulses while stooped roughly with the 2 newer ecms.

Is the replacement computer number matching to the original? If not then that’s probably the problem and I mean number matching just because the box looks the same it could be completely different inside as in programing. Dan. Canadian "EH"

Yes, on all three computers the numbers match. I think I've exhausted all of my local supplies ( at least in a 10 county area) just to find two. I am looking online though, and a friend said something about reprogramming the ecm, which I have not heard of...

If the car was OBD II 1996 and later then yes it could likely be reprogrammed but I’m not sure if a 93 could. This is just a thought but is there an access panel on the ECM that would allow you to remove the PROM (programmable read only memory) chip. I’m not familiar enough with Nissan, but some manufactures like GM use to use them to calibrate the ECM to a specific vehicle. In other words there was one ECM that covered a bunch of different models and the PROM would tailor the setting for whatever that particular car needed to run properly. Maybe give the local dealer a call and ask some questions. Dan. Canadian "EH"

Thank you for the info and help, Dan. By any chance do you know of any good web sites for an ecm? I had one about three weeks ago and deleted it by mistake and can't seem to find it anywhere. Thanks again.
