1994 Volkswagen Golf broken rear wheel Sign In

Hello,
Last week, while driving my car on the highway, it made a noise and started zigzagging. When the tow truck came, and once it was on the truck, the driver found the problem: the right rear wheel was at an angle from the car. I've just gotten the quote from the mechanic today. He said that the bearing was bad, causing the wheel to break, and that it is now necessary to change everything - the axel, bearings, brakes, and drum - for over 1000 dollars. There was no warning that this was going to happen; no funny noises or squeeking. The car had just passed its inspection, and I'd only had it for 6 days when it broke.

My questions:
1. Is this normal when a wheel bearing fails?
2. Is this a normal price for this work, or is the garage trying to cheat me? Since this happened on the highway, the car was towed to the nearest town (insurance reasons), and is at the Volkswagen dealership garage.

Thanks for your help!

"and I'd only had it for 6 days when it broke. "
You've had the car for just 6 days?

Yes. I need to contact the seller. The insurance company will send an expert to look at the car, but I have to file a complaint first. The previous owner changed the tires before signing the car over to me. Is it possible that he didn't do it correctly, and that is what caused the failure?

Bearings don't wear out overnight. There make a lot of noise and give a lot of warning before ever getting to that point so something isn't adding up here.

I know. The mechanic said that the bearing seized up, which caused the wheel to break. That's why I think that something wasn't done correctly when the seller changed the tires, and that is what caused the bearings to fail.

Anything's possible-but- just changing tires? Maybe leaving a wheel loose is about all I can come up with. If the wheel broke and the axle dragged the road causing a need of replacement, but without seeing it I cannot say what happened. Maybe your ins guy can see what happened. Good luck.
