1994 ford ranger hits passing gear at 35 mph

1994 ford ranger hits passing gear at 35 mph Sign In

     I have an 1994 ford ranger xlt 4wd with auto tranny. when going down the road when I hit
35 mph the tranny kicks into passing gear. any ideas?

First off there is NO passing gear. Trans will just down shift based on load and speed. 35 MPH is hell for it to figure out. There is a feature to save you fuel that locks the torque converter at about that speed and will lock and unlock at about that speed. If you try the second "D" selection on your shifter that may be all it takes if that is a common speed for you. I hope that's all it is, T

  I talked to my son after reading your answer and he said that is more like when he hits around 35 mph the rpms goes up ( downshifting?) but when he gets to 45 mph it will then shift into a higher gear.
