When it doesn't start, have someone tap on the starter a few good times with a wooden or metal stick. while you try to start the car.

Might want to rethink the stick method. If it does start that way you know the starter is bad, but it can also break the brushes out of the brush holder on a good starter. First thing to check with electrical problems is the connections at the battery and starter. With side post cables you need to get the rubber cover worked off of the cable end to get it cleaned properly. Make sure the connections at your starter are clean and tight and the battery itself is in good shape. Be sure to also inspect the ground connections, as they can cause this same trouble. If this problem persists with those things good, check for power at the control wire of the starter solenoid when the key is in start position but it will not crank. If you have power at the wire you have a bad starter. Post back with the results of what you find.
