1995 Buick LeSabre no start Sign In

Hello, my vehicle is a 1995 Buick LeSabre with a V6 and 115k miles. It has been very reliable. Today, when I turned the ignition key there was no activity of any kind, no turn over of the motor, or even a clicking of the starter. The headlights, dash board lights, and radio all worked normally. The battery is only 2 months old. When I attempted to jump start the car I achieved no results, and when I tapped the battery electrodes of the no start LeSabre, there were no sparks. The battery wires seemed somewhat less than tight, and I thought I may have found the problem, but I achieved no results. I only had a pair of plyers though, so maybe they're still not tight enough. The cables still move slightly on the electrodes. If the battery terminal weren't tight enough, would the headlights and radio still come on? Also, if the starter was bad, wouldn't I at least hear a clicking noise? It may be worthy to note that the word "security" remains lit for a couple of minutes after the key is turned off. The car has no alarm system or even a door lock "clicker" on the keychain. Thank you for the help. It is greatly appreciated! This car is my transportation to work, so I'm obviously worried. Thank you!!!!!

That would be an incorrect assumption.

That security light may be a problem. This is equipped with Passkey and the module may not be reading the key correctly.

Re: 1995 Buick LeSabre no start Sign In

Thank you, sir. (Hammer Time)

Would the next step for a mild shadetree like me be to take the starter off and have it tested?

A couple of months ago I changed the fuel pump successfully and was proud of myself for finding that issue and fixing it, and preceding that was the predictable crankfest with no start, so perhaps the starter has run its course(that's when the battery went bad, too). I thought I would at least hear click or feel warm battery cables or something. If the security light is the problem, that would probably be beyond the scope of what someone like myself could fix, unless you have some idea of what I could do about it on my own.

Thank you for your help. I'm sure questions like mine must seem very naïve to a professional like yourself, but that is what a forum like this is at least somewhat about. I will gladly accept and follow any advice I receive.

You wouldn't have to remove the starter. just test for power arriving at the small purple wire when someone else holds the key in start position using a test light. If no power there, the problem is elsewhere.

Re: 1995 Buick LeSabre no start Sign In

I drove back to where the car was parked and tried my spare key, and it fired right up! So that must have been the problem. The sensor in the daily use key must be bad. That would account for the "security" light being on. Does this happen often? I know I shouldn't consider the problem "fixed", but I think I'm on the right path. thank you for your help, Hammer Time. Any advice on what to do now that I've made this much progress? There is a way to duplicate keys like this, isn't there?

You can get a new key but you first need to know the resistance value of the good key. You can measure it with an ohmmeter. Comparing that to the problem should tell you if the other one is bad too.
