My 1995 Nissan Quest starts just fine. When I depress the brake pedal and move the shift lever there is no engagement of any of the gears (R, N, D). The shift lever just glides up and down without any resistance. The gear indicator moves from Park through D1 when I'm moving the shift lever. When the brake pedal is *not* depressed, the shift lever cannot be moved from the Park setting. So, the brake sensor is working.

I also checked the mounting plate and the two tork(sp?) screws mentioned in earlier posts. All is fine there, as well.

I was thinking the shift cable may have broken and needs replacement. Does that sound logical?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Barry

Yes, it does sound like a broken shift cable. You will have to get as look inside the console to determine which end of the cable broke.

Thanks, I found the shift cable hanging loose on the transmission side. It looks like the fastening nut is still in place. I'm thinking maybe the spherical bearing inside the eyebolt came apart. I'll get a better look at it tomorrow when it's light outside.

Thanks, again for your super quick reply. I appreciate it!

They use plastic bushings in there and that's likely fallen apart. It will require a whole new cable to repair it.
