my 96 Blazer wont start, called AAA and was told it is not my battery it has 12 volts at the battery. Had truck towed home.
Once home, I tried tapping starter with brass hammer, no luck, then put in nuetral and tried rolling vehicle and putting into gear
(auto trans) but at this point I noticed that it would roll in any gear? so I am assuming this is not starter related. Could this be
park nuetral safety switch or trans linkage? What to check? How to check?

You can't roll start an automatic transmission. The only thing you can do is wreck the trans by pulling it with the engine off, as the pump isn't turning so none of the parts are receiving lubrication. You didn't go more than a few feet with it so thats not going to hurt you, but a few miles of being pulled by a chain would be damaging to let you know.

You need to start looking for power now to narrow this down. The battery connections on this are side post and get filled with corrosion. You have to get them worked out of their rubber covers with a pick to properly clean them. Must be clean, shiny and tight on both battery and starter ends. Ground must also be the same way. You need to see if you have 12v to the small trigger wire on the solenoid when the key is turned to the start position. If you do, you know the neutral safety switch is fine. You would then need to do a voltage drop test to the power and ground sides of the cables. If you don't know exactly what I mean by that let me know and I will explain it. If it passes the voltage drop test you know you have a bad starter.

If you don't get 12v to the trigger wire during the starting attempt, try moving the shifter around a bit while holding the key in start and see if that will allow it to start.
