1998 CHEVY BLAZER 4WD WON'T ENGAGE

1998 CHEVROLET S-10 BLAZER 4.3 LITER 180,000 MILES I TRY TO PUT MY BLAZER INTO 4-HI, LIGHT(ON BUTTON) BLINKS AND THEN GOES OUT. BUT IT SOUNDS LIKE IT "ENGAGES", BUT FRONT TIRES DON'T SPIN. WHEN I TRY 4-LOW, THE LIGHT BLINKS THEN STAYS LIT. AND AGAIN, IT SOUNDS AS IF THE 4WD HAS ENGAGED. ALTHOUGH THE FRONT WHEELS DON'T SPIN. PLEASE HELP. I GUESS WE ARE SUPPOSED TO GET AROUND 12'' OF SNOW BY TOMORROW AM HERE. THANKS FOR HELPING.

Its been awhile since i've worked on that year. I believe you have a thermal actuator on the front axle . It expands when voltage is applied (4 wheel drive selected ) it then pushes in a pin and locks the inner /outer halves of the axle and gives you 4wd. THese actuators are filled with a gel that is notorious for slow operation in cold. They make a retro kit that converts it to electric motor. .First check all fuses. then remove actuator and see if it lenghtens when 4wd is selectd , if not and you have pwr to it ,,,,A)find another oem one...... B)Retro it ,,,, C) Find a way to keep the pin in ,,Spacer maybe. LIFE'S SHORT GO FISH
