1998 GMC Pickup won't Start

I have a 1998 GMC sierra with the 5.7L Vortec. It has 210,000 miles on it. The other day I started it up to leave the store and drove about 500 ft and it died, and I could not get it to start again. I put a fuel pressure tester on it and the static pressure is 60 psi. I have spark on my cylanoid and at the spark plug. My next guess would be that my timing may have jumped. Any easy way to check the timing or any other possibilities. I pulled the # 1 plug and had someone turn the motor over till it was on the compression stroke trying to get it to TDC. I pulled the distributor cap and the rotor is pointing toward #1 spark plug wire. I am not sure I am completely on TDC. If my timing jumped would it be real obvious by looking at the at the rotor? Thanks

Try spraying some starting fluid into the throttle body and see if it tries to start. So I sprayed starter fluid in carburetor and the truck would not start. So I performed a compression test like you suggested and all the cylinders tested between 150-165. Wh I performed a compression test about 2 yrs ago and had similar results. I am lost as to what the problem could be. I would assume the compression test results would rule out the timing jumping, because if the timing was off that would mess up the compression test results. Any thoughts on what else it could be?

I can check my spark again. But I checked the coil and my # 1 plug and i had spark at both.

mikebill: Totally agree this wouldn't even need to be an engine to react if compressed fuel (starting fluid tested) enough compression and spark it should be doing something. Totally suggests one or more of the tests is plain wrong. A maybe not mentioned or noticed. Is it possible distributor has been moved and spark is totally so far off it's at the exact wrong time so nothing happens? Last is plugs are so wrecked or soaked spark doesn't occur at all otherwise this is impossible, T

Right - no question. I still suspect some test or item is all wrong. Last comment was plugs or if flooded bad enough even the metal of inside can be so wet with junk it takes the spark somehow without making spark at all. OMG - one was a Chev Chevette so long ago! Took leaving plugs out for a whole day let it air dry once it finally started the heat dried out the junk. Can't know as it had all the right things to fire if it was a coffee can not even an engine at all but refused to do a thing. Can't find one anymore a couple more I got to heat up with a "Portable Ignition System" just a wire that sprays sparks such that all plugs almost have to do the same. Will start a chainsaw using a spare battery to power it works still do that. This makes no sense without something all wrong. For all I know the starting fluid is plain water or something not flammable at all? Lost, T
