Car:

- 1998 Honda Civic Hatchback DX automatic
- I do not know the engine size
- It's at about 110,000 miles or so last time I checked

Symptoms:

1) Car will randomly stall while driving and be completely inoperable. When I try to start it again, sometimes it will start just fine and give me no problems for the rest of the day (sometimes a while week) while other times it will take a few trys but it always will eventually start.

2) Car will stall a few minutes after starting it. This will be the first time I drove it for the day or after I have driven it for a while that day. If it does not start after many tries, it will always eventually start if I press on the gas while starting it.

This has been happening for the last few months. It died once after just starting it for the first time a few months ago and then I had no other problems until the next month when it did it again. It now seems to be more frequent.

There are no extreme temperatures that could be causing this issue where I live and it has happened in the morning, afternoon, and evening. There also seems to be no signs of it leading up to it stalling. It just happens at random. There seems to be no pattern for when it will stall and it always starts again.

What has been replaced so far:

The battery, the spark plugs, the air filter, and the idol air control valve replaced with new coolent.

Does anyone know what the problem could be?
Do you think the mechanic has been trouble shooting in a professional manner? I just paid over $400 for a new idol air control vavle and nothing has changed in addition to the other parts that have been replaced within the past few months. I have visited them about 5 or 6 times now with the same issue. What do you think should be done?

When it won't start is it dead like there's no battery in it or does it crank? Testing an intermittent needs be fast while it's down,

Thanks for trying to help. I found this:

link deleted.... not allowed

It was the faulty ignition switch that Honda installed in many of their cars. I took it to the dealer and had it replaced for free and now it works fine. I had to find this out myself by doing a search on the internet and the auto shop I go to didn't know about it.

So, this means the idol air control valve didn't even need to be replaced. $450 lost. What do you think I should do? Should I stay with the current auto shop I go to? What do you think would be fair this case?

Hey - this isn't an easy biz and never was in my life. Ask nicely if you wish for some consideration but I didn't have an exact answer either for you! It's wicked expensive to so much as touch cars for biz so it is to you too. Arggh! Not sure what to say. If folks/techs tried in good faith than I'm going to side with them.

Just know that about anything that moves has faults - try a mule for example!

Right now - best I can offer is that it's not an easy biz. Techs try hard and it costs a fortune to do this stuff. I'm retired so it over but good grief I swear I could have done better for $$ with almost anything else. Ask for consideration but I strongly suggest being civil about it!
