1998 Lumina Starter Relay Fuse Issues Sign In

Hi all,

Let's just say that over the past few months I have gone through a lot of fuses. My problem is that at seemingly random times, when I go to start my car the 5amp fuse to the starter relay will blow. This doesn't stop the starter from cranking though, so as long as I don't stop too early the car WILL start, even when the fuse has blown. I have not been able to pin down any sort of pattern as to when the fuse blows. After it has blown, the next time I go to start the car I will have to replace the fuse and it will start like normal. Sometimes, it will be over a week or more in between incidents, while other times the fuse will blow every time it is replaced until I drive somewhere and then it will usually be fine for another few days.

So far I have replaced what I believe to be the theft deterrent relay. It was located above and behind the glove box and the car would not start when it was removed.

I have done a bit of searching around on the internet for people with similar problems, and done a bit of poking around inside the car as well. I suspect that it may be the Park/Neutral safety switch, as that is on the same circuit I don't think that it is the starter itself. However, before I go to the trouble of removing things to get to the switch itself or ordering any parts, I thought I would get the opinions of people who surely know a lot more about this kind of thing than myself.

As a side note, is there any way that old battery terminals could cause a problem like this?

Thanks in advance for any thoughts you'd like to share.
