1998 ford expedition shaking when drives Sign In

I have a 98 Ford Expedition 5.4L V8. w/ 187,907 miles on it. I was driving my truck yesterday and I noticed that it was shaking constantly. I drove it about 2 blocks and turned around I got back home and noticed a funny smell coming from it. I checked fluid levels and I had NO oil at all. (this has never happened to me ever) So i went back to the store and got 3 quarts of oil and added it. waited for about 2 hours and drove it down the road and it was still doing the same thing as before. But the check engine light was flashing on and off. I haven't driven it since. My husband knows some about cars but he said that he had no idea what it might be. Whatever it is and it cost more to get it fixed then I am getting rid of it.

The flashing check engine light is indicating that the engine is misfiring bad enough to damage the catalytic Converter and that you shouldn't be driving it that way. If you have the codes read, they will indicate which cylinder has the problem and you can check it out. This engine is very notorious for having bad ignition coils and may have had nothing to do with oil level in the first place.

So basically I need to get my spark plugs and coil on plug boots replaced and that should fix the problem. I think that the same thing happened to me in the spring time of this year and my husband replaced 3 of them because he wasn't able get to the others and it stopped shaking in all. I have someone to replace all of them now, but you think that replacing all of those would take care of the problem. please respond.

Replacing all 8 coils can be an expensive proposition at $60 to $80 a pop. You really need to isolate the right cylinders first.
