1999 Chevy Venture won't start Sign In

In June my 1999 Cevy venture wouldn't start when I went shopping. Managed to bang the starter & get it started & immediately took it to my mechanic. Two weeks later while in Ohio the car wouldn;t start again. Towed it to the local Pep Boys who replaced my starter again. When it still wouldn't start they replaced the ignition switch. One month later my car wouldn't start again. Towed it back to local Pepe Boys here in IL who replaced both the starter & ignition switch again ( free of charge this time). Drove it home & parked it over night. Next morning it wouldn't start again. Towed it back to Pep Boys who is now telling me it's my ignition lock assembly. Does this sound right?? What does an ignition lock assembly have to do with starting the car??

IMO not the lock assy of key itself. There's a connection making poor contact somewhere as it seems intermittent by your description so far.

What exactly happens when it doesn't start? Click, flutter, nothing?

Usually I hear nothing. This last time, tho, I could hear a low hum - like it was getting juice from the battery but nothing turned, click, fluttered or anything else. From what I read if it's the lock assembly the key shouldn't be turning but it is.....

Battery known ok - right? Do headlights stay bright while attempting?

Does this use a chip on the key? That could be a problem.

If so use your original spare if you have it.

The hum could be low voltage/amps getting to starter or the fuel pump priming up. Is that noise from starter or the gas tank?

Battery is ok & yes, the lights stay bright while attempting to start the car. I am using the original key with the chip. I believe the hum is from the starter.

You/I need you to verify source of that hmmm. Is it loud? Is it like starter is turning but not turning/cranking the engine?

It's possible to have a run on faulty starters -stinks after one and another bad part does the same but it's happened before but let's be sure.

It this was just low amps at battery cables almost all would dim out or shut down headlights with the monster load of battery. Perhaps the cable to battery is marginal but you usually get a click. It could be frayed inside insulation but would think you'd see a burned spot along it somewhere, where it gets too hot.

Try a stethoscope or listening rod with all caution please to verify source of noise. We should be able to nail this down,

Unfortunately Pep Boys has the car back & I cannot diagnose as you want. They have stated that after all the other work has been done, NOW I need this ignition lock replaced which just doesn't sound right to me. When I questioned Pep Boys about it they mumbled something about the cylinder might not be turning & making contact correctly BUT my keys do turn in the lock. Just sounds funny to me.....

This is generic for the most part but you can see the lock assy really pushes a rod to the ign switch. As long as that feels and moves to the start position AND the switch was put in properly it shouldn't involve the key stuff at all.

If this doesn't work now that they have it then I have a beef with their thinking or maybe I'm all wet on this one.

Hope it works but I think they are barking up the wrong tree. Hey - I'm not there looking at itCrazy

I have the same problem but in my case the 40 amp starter fuse keeps blowing.
The mechanic has replaced a new starter and solinoid and he told me it was not the starter.

The no start problem is happening since one week. I am stumped. It will cost $ 100.00 for diagnostic test by the dealer or other mechanic.

I do not know what to do. ??

Guest - Please start a new thread for your vehicle. Blowing a fuse is not in the cards so starter circuit is using too much juice IMO.

Again - new thread with your exact vehicle and engine will help,
