1999 Dodge Intrepid Sign In

I have a 1999 Dodge Intrepid with a key/lock problem. Uses Sentry electronic key. After I insert the key in the lock it will not turn in any direction and obviously cannot get the engine to start or move the shift out of park. Tried turning the steering wheel and releasing shift button but no luck. Any suggestions? Do I try a locksmith, Dodge dealer or local automotive repair shop. Appreciate any help.

does your key have a chip on it. if it does then you need to go to a dealer seeing thats the key for that praticular car. if not pull the ignition switch out. now you can do this one of two ways. there should be a peice of metal sticking out inside the hole from the ignition switch. the switch connects to it. try turning it . if the car starts its the ignition switch. if not it's somewhere in the steering column. the other way is to just go get a new ignition switch and install it and hope it works. let me know if that helps any.

Darrin,

Thanks so much for your recommendation. My keys do have a chip in them. I have 2 and have been using them ever since I purchased the car. Neither one works now. I can open the doors and the trunk with them but when I insert the key in the lock on the steering column it won't budge in any direction. It's like inserting the wrong key in a lock on a door in your home. Where is the hole for the ignition switch? I'm somewhat of a novice with cars. Thanks again.

Joe

if there is a chip on the key it needs to bee replaced by a dealer. i think they have to reprogram the computer for that key or something. if it didn't which wouldn't apply to your car you would have to pull the ignition switch off first then reach inside with a pair of pliers and turn the metal peice. i've had to do it to a few vehicals. some times it works sometimes it don't. make sure the wires are pluged in and the ignition switch turned to on. but your going to have to take that to a garage. the computer must read that chip.let me know if that works.

Re: 1999 Dodge Intrepid Sign In

Darrin,

Just wanted to let you know that I got my Intrepid to turn on, but not without problems. I squirted some WD40 in the ignition lock, tap the key and rocked the steering wheel back and forth. I don't know which one got it to work. However, it really hasn't solved the problem because when I remove the key and try to restart, the lock still freezes up and I have to fiddle with it to get it to start again. Naturally, I'm leery about driving the car anywhere where I might get stuck. I guess I'll have to go to an auto locksmith, Dodge dealer or local repair shop. Anyway, thanks so much for your help.

Joe
