1999 Oldsmobile Alero GLS won't start Sign In

Year: 1999
Make: Oldsmobile
Model: Alero GLS
Engine: V6 3.4L
Mileage: 145k

So the other day I tried to start it and it wouldn't start but you could hear clicking as if its trying to start so then I had someone jump it and it started. Next I went to Autozone to get the battery tested which is at 94% but they said they had a bad connection and couldn't test the alternator. So then I went and got gas and went home and turned it off and on in total thoughout that whole trip 4 times with no problems. I also cleaned off some corrosion on the connectors for the battery then let it sit till today and it still won't start but I hear the same clicking sound. I noticed the security light is on and the battery light but I'm not sure if they were on yesterday so I kept the key in the on position for 10 minutes to reset the security light which it did but it completely drained my battery and now none of the lights in the car light up and when I try to start it nothing happens.

Well that's my story I hope someone has an answer as I'm not sure if it's the alternator, security light, battery, starter, or what... But thanks for reading I hope I can fix this soon. :P

The starter is a possibility but the circuit needs to be tested while the problem is present. You can't check anything while it's working.

Isn't that what you just said it did?

If it's an intermittant problem, it won't do any good to test anything when the problem isn't present.

Like I said the problems still there it wont start :( lol but what I meant is that I thought it wouldnt even start with someone jumping it if the starter is broke?

And you never said anything about it starting with a jump either. Too much misinformation for me. I'm outta here.

Its in the first sentence... I added "and it started" so others can understand it lol. Hopefully taking it to a mechanic tomorrow but still open to any other answers... Thanks for the replies though Hammer Time.

"Jett - you went back to edit this after all had read it up top. There's no notice that critical info was changed so now it's all confused. It would have been better not to edit that but to add that top post was wrong later.

It started with a jump so now find out why it wont without a jump,

It still works with a jump I just drove it again today with one but I'm sure hours later it wont start unless I jump it.

OK - Start this problem from just that comment and forget what is prior to it for the moment. If it starts with a jump and everything is wonderful but will not start on its own then it needs to narrow it down to battery + connections are trouble, battery itself will not hold a charge or charging system is weak to maintain battery up to full charge for the next start.

Each thing must be tested as good or not. A snag with a constantly low charge or hard working alternator is that it can take out or harm both. Gotta narrow this problem down. Right now it starts with a jump so you can rule out the starter and connections there. Move on and find the weak link or get help to pin it down and decide if you want to do it or have it done,

Well I figured out the problem, it was just a bad battery so I went out and bought a new one and now she starts up nice a smooth! :) Thanks for the help though everyone.

Gee, amazing how simple it could have been with the important facts to start with.
