2000 Ford Excort ZX2 2.0 DOCH 149,000 Auto Trans My car seems not to want to shift into 3rd gear. I runs ok in the city, but if I try to go on the freeway, the RPMs seem to be very high (4500) at 50mph. My mechanic just replaced shift solenoids (a and c) about 3 weeks ago. The code reading for the problem with these solenoids were that they were off or performance. Only 2 weeks after having these replaced the same error code appeared for solenoid A. 1) Anyone know why this solenoid would have the same problem as before? I know all the solenoids (he replace all 4) were new because I saw them before they were installed. 2) How does the solenoid work? 3) Does the trans-fluid pressure have any thing to do with the proper solenoid functioning. Now some people are suggesting that I have the trans rebuilt. Would this solve the problem? Thank everyone in advance for all of the help.

1) usually will throw a code (o/d off light flashing or on) 2) solenoid energizes and will move a plunger in when energized out when not basically opening and closing a valve. 3) Pressure has no affect on how solenoid open or closes the passage way for fluid. Best thing to do is check the condition of your fluid pull the dipstick look for blackish fluid, burnt smelling, sign's of metal(might be hard to see put some on your finger and look at it in the light look for shining).. Any of those are sign's of transmission troubles. you should have car scanned for codes there me be codes that wont trigger a light.. They will be able to tell if its mechanical or electrical by watching the transmission PIDS
