2000 Mazda 626 Running Hot Sign In

I have a 2000 Mazda 626 LX, with about 80,000 miles. A couple of weeks ago, my check engine light came on, and the car started running very hot. As soon as I noticed this, I turned on the heat full blast and drove it for a couple of miles until I got to the nearest auto parts shop. I checked and the coolant was bone dry, so I went in and bought some more and filled it up. The attendant looked my car up on the computer and told me which one to buy, so I assume that I got the right kind of coolant. I don't drive my car much during the summer, so I've only driven it maybe 20 miles since then, but the check engine light is still on and as of the day before yesterday it was still running very hot, although it has yet to overheat or cause any damage that I can tell. As far as I can tell, it looks like the coolant is being taken up into the engine.

What should I do?

That's the best way I know to be buying a new motor. You may have started with a small leak somewhere but I'm betting you've done some serious damage now by driving it hot.
