2000 S-10 Problem. PLEASE HELP!!! Sign In

I have a 2000 Chevy s-10 2.2l non flex fuel automatic trans. It starts and runs for approximatley a second then dies. It is not losing spark. I replaced the fuel pump less than a year ago, and have jumped across the fuel relay to keep the pump running. if i spray fuel into the intake as it starts it will start and continue to run until i stop spraying fuel. if i dont spray fuel into the intake, it will start, and then die almost immediately. please help.

Do you have a security light on or flashing when you try to start it?

Has anything been replaced on it recently?

Nothing has been replaced recently. I'm not sure about the security light. If the security light is lit/flashing does this mean ignition switch.

It would mean the Passlock security system is locking you out.

Try the relearn procedure.


PASSLOCK REPROGRAMMING AUTO LEARN

IMPORTANT: Due to component variability, the vehicle theft deterrent (VTD) system must have the learn procedure performed regardless, if the vehicle starts on the first ignition cycle after a VTD repair.

You must perform a theft relearn procedure if any of the following components have been replaced:
  • Passlock Sensor
  • Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC)
  • Powertrain control module (PCM) The above modules, with the exception for the Passlock Sensor must also be programmed with each module's own vehicle configuration.

AUTO LEARN
Time required, approximately 10 minutes:
  1. Insure that the battery is fully charged.
  2. Use the scan tool in order to clear the DTCs.
  3. Turn the ignition switch from the OFF position to the CRANK position attempting to start the vehicle. The vehicle will start and then stall.
  4. Leave the ignition switch in the ON position while observing the security indicator.
  5. When the security indicator turns off, which can take up to 10 minutes, turn the ignition switch off. Wait 10 seconds.
  6. The BCM and the PCM will learn the new code on the next start attempt.

I have tried the relearn procedure and after 20 minutes the security light is still flashing. Do I need to leave my obd 2 plugged in during this procedure or could there be another issue?

Try the 30 minute procedure

Make sure you attempt to start it first and when it stalls, leave it alone. If the light never goes out, then you have a hard failure in the system, probably a bad ignition switch.



Disconnect the battery and hold the cables together for about 30 seconds then reconnect the cables before performing the procedure.Read it carefully if done incorrectly it won't work.If it helps let me know.
Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
Attempt to start the engine, then release the key to ON (vehicle will not start).
Observe the SECURITY telltale, after approximately 10 minutes the telltale will turn OFF.
Turn OFF the ignition, and wait 5 seconds.
Repeat steps 1 through 4 two more times for a total of 3 cycles/30 minutes (the vehicle is now ready to relearn the Passlock™ Sensor Data Code and/or passwords on the next ignition switch transition from OFF to CRANK).
Important
The vehicle learns the Passlock™ Sensor Data Code and/or password on the next ignition switch transition from OFF to CRANK. You must turn the ignition OFF before attempting to start the vehicle.
Start the engine (the vehicle has now learned the Passlock™ Sensor Data Code and/or password).
With a scan tool, clear any DTCs if needed (history DTCs will self clear after 100 ignition cycles).

I have now tried the relearn procedure again. The security light never stops flashing. I watched it for almost 30 minutes. Any ideas would be very helpful

It could be a bad ignition switch but your going to need a Tech2 scan tool to diagnose it.

I replaced the ignition switch today after the first relearn attempt. Unfortunatley I don't have a tech 2 nor am I financially able to purchase one. Is there anyway to bypass the system?

I also replaced the ignition module, coil packs, and checked fuel pressure at the rail. It is 55 psi. I tested for injector pulse by way of test lamps that plug directly into the injector harness. I know I'm losing injector pulse.

I can give you a way to bypass the sensor itself but since you have already replaced the cylinder, it likely won't help you. the problem has to be elsewhere and the scan tool is the only way to identify the problem.


Here is the bypass but it likely won't help because the rest of the system is still required to work correctly..




Go buy a 2.2k (2200 ohm) ohm resistor at an electronics store. Go to radio shack and just get one as close to that as you can. Remove the covers on the steering column and locate three small wires at the lock cylinder. Cut the yellow wire and the orange/black wire or on some vehicles, it’s the yellow and black wires. Solder the resistor between those wires. Tape it up and put the covers back on and follow this relearn procedure. If this doesn't work you have a wiring problem in the steering column. 30 Minute Re-Learn Procedure
  1. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  2. Attempt to start the engine, then release the key to ON (vehicle will not start).
  3. Observe the SECURITY telltale, after approximately 10 minutes the telltale will turn OFF.
  4. Turn OFF the ignition, and wait 5 seconds.

I'm going to add just a quick variation to try.....

Hook up a charger, turn to the on position but don't try to start or turn to the start postion, go directly to on and leave it.....Let it stay on for a minimum of 10 minutes, going a little long is ok but don't go short (go 11 just to be sure). After 10 minutes, try to start it. If it doesn't start repeat 2 more times.

Ok guys, I've tried all the aforementioned ways to set the passlock system into a relearn mode. None of which have worked.

Without a highend scanner, these were about the only DIYer procedures you could try......

In a nutshell the way the system works, you have to start the truck with a key. The ign lock sends a signal to the BCM (body comp) when the key is used, the sensors tells the BCM, all is good, lets go. When the BCM gets the wrong code or isn't sure, it shuts the engine down.

Sometimes its just a glitch from the sensor in the lock. Then the relearn fixes it. Sometimes the sensor goes bad. Replacing it & doing the relearn fixes it.... Sounds like you've done these

Now it's to the point where you need a scanner to see where the problem is. A Tech II would be the best option, there are some aftermarket scanners that would work. Minimum bare bones you are looking at around 4k to get tooled to do this, then you need to know how to troubeshoot the system. Someone might be willing to walk you thru this if you were able to get the scanner but it would get very time consuming....

The cheapest option at this point might be to take it in....... Just double check your wiring connections from when you installed the new switch. If any thing looks off, fix it, rerun the relearn, both ways if it still doesn't start, then you did a good job with the tools you had but have run up against a wall.

Ok guys, I got my hands on a tech 2, code P1632 and B2947. Does this mean lock cylinder, ignition switch or both?

The P1632 is merely telling you that there has been a security activation.

The B2947 is the one you have to chase.

Just wanted to thank you all for the input. As it turns out, the three wires from the passlock module had to be removed from the connector under the dash, soldered and reinstalled. After this fix, the truck fired up and ran perfectly.
