2000 S10 4X4 Loud Noise

I'm getting a loud banging noise in 4 whl drive - no problem in 2 whl. We had about a foot of snow. It goes into 4H okay but as soon as the front wheels started to get a grip it banged. Repeats every time there is a load on the drive train. To troubleshoot I temporarily disconnected the cable at the frt differential, pulled out the plunger, and wired it in place to be sure the rt frt axle was fully engaged. Drove the truck & noise is still there so it's not coming from a partially engaged frt axle unless it is already damaged. Also I think the noise is coming from the transfer case rather than front diff or axle. It has the 233 t-case. I've read about problems with T-case motor, switch etc. but all the posts seem to be about problems engaging 4 whl, not this loud bang that I'm getting in 4 whl mode. Any ideas??? Does the chain ever slip? Would it make this type of noise? It's really loud and sounds like it could be doing major bad things inside. PS: Happy New Year & thanks to Tom G and Dan D for the help with my brake bleeding project in Sept.
