Hello! So I'm in a pinch and hoping for some advice! I have a 2000 6cyl Oldsmobile Alero with 160,000miles. One year ago I replaced the serpentine belt on my car. My car just broke down and it's a piece that runs the belt that fell off due to the inside being stripped and the bolt falling out. The mechanic is saying the belt looks a little worn (probably from the time I was driving it with the tension falling apart) so I will also need to replace that along with bolting the piece back on. The kicker is, he says he can fill it and redrill but it's only a 70/30 chance it will work for $460.00. Or he can get a whole new piece for $1800. My car isn't even worth that! Please somebody give some advice whether I should pay the money and chance him redrilling, or if it's not worth the money and get rid of my car :( Thanks!

If those are the best odds he can give you for his repair, then maybe he should be in a different business and you should be looking for a different mechanic.

Does anyone have advice on how easy it is to just buy a new alternator mount bracket and replace it myself?

This bracket appears to cover the entire front of the engine and has all the accessories attached to it so it will be quite a job to change

Ya, the tensioner is bolted to the timing cover. You really shouldn't have a problem finding one of those. Book time is around 5.6 hr.

Call around a get a few options....I can't see how bad it is, so I don't know if a heli-coil or timecert is an options or not...
That's kind of a poor design for a belt tensioner.....but there are worse out there...... Some older Saturns, the top pivot of the alternator is part of the block...I don't know how he did it,,,but I saw a tech break one of those off......For a while it looked like he might have been putting a new engine in that one....
