2000 Pontiac grand prix gt 3.8l v6 200000+ miles.
ok let me start by saying thank you for any help you can give. so on to the issue at hand. this car had a few issues such as multiple cylinder misfires, and bad oil leaks but it would run. I checked coil packs, spark plugs, and wires, all were fine. i decided to handle the so called "easy stuff" first so on to the leaks. replaced both valve cover gaskets, in doing so i broke the old elbows going in to the intake and water pump. the piece was still in the intake, i tried my hardest to get it out to no avail. i took the intake off and snaked it out. so i thought i had won! no i did not. after painstakenly putting everything back where it belongs, i tried cranking it. the car wont crank now but will crank over and now it backfires now and sounds pretty bad. it almost sounds like something is going to brake. what have i done

What exactly does that mean? What did you do?

Sorry I've never used online for car questions. I inspected the plug wires no carbon build up or streaks on the plugs no cracks not worn, as a matter of fact they look pretty new. I went ahead and labeled them so they would not get mixed up. spark plugs were used obviously but not bad. so I got a spark tester and tested for spark, each coil pack was firing on each terminal, and then I tested to see if they were switching signal between the individual coil packs with a led test light and they were switching signals. I ran out of ideas so like I said I went to what I thought would be a bit easier but needless to say I was wrong.

Visual inspection doesn't tell you much of anything about the internal resistance or leakage.

Depending what kind of spark tester you used, that may not tell you much either. You need to know the quality and capacity of the spark to determine the health of a coil.

You first need to determine if your failure is due to ignition, fuel or compression before you can blame anything specific.

I have a spark light tester that plugs in to the coil pack and the other end to the plug wire and has a light in between. what is a good tester to use and how much does a noid light usually run

I suspected that's what you were using. That gives you no idea of the strength of the spark.

You need something like this that can be adjusted to jump a longer gap.
