2001 Chevy Cavalier starting issue Sign In

I have a 2001 Chevy cavalier w/ a 2.4L engine and 145000 miles.Every now and then the engine would crank over but fail to start,no matter what the weather and engine temp.If it sat for 20-30 minutes it would restart and run fine.No problems for weeks or months at a time. Now it won't start cold without help. I Removed the tube going into the throttle and gave it a shot of starting fluid and it started.I shut it off and it restarted.I drove it 4-5 miles and shut it off.Let it sit for 20-30 minutes and it won't start without starting fluid.I replaced the fuel pump and fuel presure regulator and also the cam sensor. The fuel filter is 2 months old. I also changed the spark plugs. It still doesn't start without starting fluid, when it runs it runs great. I also have a emissions code on about the evap.system thats been on for a couple years (fuel cap).Any ideas before I shoot starting fluid in my mouth! Sorry for the long post. Lou Felice

If you have been ignoring the check engine light for a couple years, then you don't know if it has set any new codes recently. That's the problem with ignoring that stuff, no matter how unimportant it may seem.

I suggest you get the codes read and maybe you will get lucky and see a code for a temp sensor or something like that.

I have a code reader/scanner and it's the same code. I clear the codes and the check engine light goes out for a week or so. I've checked the hoses/lines at the charcoal canister and replaced the gas cap. I don't see anything wrong so I check and clear the codes every now and then. Will a temp. sensor prevent it from starting like this ? I'm running out of things to change. Thanks for the reply Hammer. Louie

Not all problems are solved by changing parts.

If you have a scan tool, ten you need to look at the MAP, ECT and IAT temp readings. Do this with the car cold and the temp sensors should match each other. If no problem found there, you need to look at the fuel pressure and for any vacuum leaks
