When I put on the brakes the car shakes and dies but if I put it in neutral and brake it is ok. Why when in drive does it die?

judy; Is the check engine light coming on or blinking? Could be a dirty/sticky IAC motor (Idle air control) which controls idle speed by allowing more air into the intake. Most of the time, it can be just cleaned. On the other hand, you may have an engine misfire that is causing the roughness. The IAC motor can be removed and cleaned manually. This is a very easy operation, using spray carb cleaner. Most any repair shop should be able to do this for you.

no engine light but took it to a auto repair to diagnose and they heard a knocking in the engine. Would that have anything to do with it?

judy; If the knock sensor picks up on that knocking, it will retard the timing thinking it is pre-ignition, which in turn will cause the rpm to lower. The first order would be to find out what is causing the noise.
