Hi. When I purchased my vehicle in 2005 they installed a remote starter system for me which would start up my van, and both lock and unlock the doors. After two or three years the ability to start the windstar didn't work any more but the locking and unlocking thing still worked (at least with one set of keys).....a couple of days ago a friend of mine said he heard how to reprogram the remote by turning the key to aux. and then off (8 times, leaving it on the aux. position on the eighth twist).....while in this aux position, he told me to push each individual icon on the key thingy. I did and could hear both the lock and unlock sound,,,i also pushed the "starter" icon and then turned the key to the off position. While in the vehicle, i tried the lock and unlock buttons and they both worked. Then by golly didn't the van start when i tried the starter button. I was amazed and ran into work to tell everyone. But then when it was time to go home, i unlocked the door with the remote and tried the starter. All i got was a flashing headlight followed a couple of seconds later by a pair of flashing headlights in rapid succession. And it hasn't worked since. Now when i try to reprogram it again, instead of the sounds i got the first time, i get this green light buzzing on the key pad My locking and unlocking are still working fine, but not the starter and it gets pretty cold here in the mornings and late at night. Please help. Again, it's a 2001 Ford Windstar 3.8 V6 with about 148,000 kilometres on it. thanks in advance

Aftermarket remote starter's have two seperate functions . One is to lock and unlock the doors . The lock/unlock is pretty basic . The other is the starter circuit . The vehicle has a anti theft system which uses a key with a minature transponder in the handle . In order for the car to start without a key in the ign , a transponder bypass is installed . It sounds like this unit has failed . Try this , insert an orginal factory key in the ign but do not turn . Try the remote start . If car starts you have two options, put an orginal key in the column housing as close to the switch as possible, or go to a stero/alarm shop and get an estimate . If it does not crank with key in ign you will have to go to same shop. LIFE'S SHORT GO FISH

re-tired; thank you so much for your quick response and one which enabled me to use the remote starter again. you were spot on about leaving an original key in the column while attempting the start up with another. again, thanks so much for the right answer and for saving me money on re-programming charges at the place i had it installed in the first place.
