I had the car running around thanksgiving and then had to leave the car at home to leave for college. After I came back a couple days ago the battery was dead so I tried to pop the clutch to get the car to start again. My driveway is on a hill so I rolled the car backwards shifted into first gear with my foot on the clutch and let the clutch out a couple times. About the 3rd time the car started letting out some smoke from under the hood somewhere under the engine. After I went to jump start the car it would not start. It would crank. Start for 1 to 2 seconds then cut out sometimes with a popping noise. Ideas?

You rolled backwards and and popped it in 1st gear? You turned the engine backwards. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

What do you mean turned it backwards? I've put the car in first when it has been rolling backwards before.

That would be a very foolish thing to do.

What ever direction the car is rolling, logic would dictate that you should use a gear you normally use going in that direction.....Same thing as rolling forward & then using reverse......Basically you had been getting lucky.. What size engine is it?

4.6 V8 5 speed. I see now that it was a bad idea. I'm trying to figure out what is not workin correctly and how to fix it. Some have suggested the timing may be off?

ouch...hydraulic tensioners, chain guides, OHCs. Unless you can catch a chain problem using a compression gauge, your either going to have to scope the cam and crank signals to see if they are in sync or pull the valve covers and use the cam holding tools and make sure that everything is lined up. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

a compression test may be the easiest thing to do at this point, also pull the codes as well, see if there is any help there.. ALSO........Don't ever roll a car backwards & pop the clutch with it in any forward gear, actually if you car going to try to push start a car, do it going forward..........

Thanks for the advice, I am going to try to get someone with the right equipment tomorrow if not after Christmas. Unfortunately this seems like it will be an expensive lesson... I will never do that again

Yes, it may be expensive. The engine can't run backwards and everything is set up for one direction rotation.
