2001 Mustang Wheel Damage Question Sign In

Hello,

Year: 2001
Make: Ford
Model: Mustang (vanilla)
Engine: 4cyl
Miles: ~30,000
Condition: Garaged

My girlfriend ran over a curb recently in her 2001 Mustang and dented the rim a bit. Everything seems fine, but the tire involved (front left) seems to leak air a little faster than the other tires (2~3psi difference in a month). She does not drive the car very often at all, maybe 10-15 miles per week.

Here is a link to a picture of the wheel: http://i52.tinypic.com/96vrqg.jpg

I told her to bring it into a tire place and get it checked out. Hopefully it is just a small hole or something that can be repaired, but if not, what kind of costs am I looking at?? I figure it could be sidewall damage or a bent rim that cant be fixed. In either case I would probably need a new tire or wheel.

I am not going to be able to be there with her and we need to get this taken care of before we go on a road trip in some wet conditions. Any insight you guys can provide would be great!!

Thanks,

T

That doesn't look to bad and considering the small amount of air loss I really doubt the rim is cracked.

Since the damage it real close to the valve stem, I would probably change that out just to be on the safe side.

That bend would be easily repairable at any tire shop within minutes but there will would probably be some small marks on the rim. If you want a flawless repair then that would have to go to a shop specializing in wheel repair and the price would be a lot higher.

The shop I'm at would do that for free with a tire repair, a markless repair would probably be in the $40 to $80 range...

Ahh this is great news. I don't think she particularly cares about the aesthetics or anything. So to repair the bend/fix the tire/swap the valve stem you reckon it would be about.... $$? I kind of feel like if she gets away for under $100 she's in good shape.

It would really depend on where the leak is.

I'm guessing it's just a bead leak, due to the bend or valve stem. It that is the case you should be in the $20 ro $30 range.

If the rim is in fact cracked or there is sidewall damage to the tire I can't see then it's going to be a lot more expensive, If I remember those where Michelin tires, a good tire but not cheap.
If it turns out you need a rim I would check around at some wrecking yards, that will probably be your best price and you can match the factory rim..... Also check with some used tire & wheel shops (for a rim.....not a tire)

Just a note: You can find most leaks with plain Windex sprayed on suspect areas or soapy water - gives you an idea and location - then mark that area for the repair,
