2001 PT Cruiser rattling

I have a 2001 Limited Edition PT Cruiser. While driving down the road, I noticed a bit of a rattling sound coming from the front/engine area. It got worse when the car was idle, then seemed to go away when I started up again, only to come back as soon as I turned a corner. I started experimenting with things and figured out it only happens when I turn the A/C on (not just the fan). It's an awful rattle and has gotten pretty loud. I haven't gone to a mechanic yet, just hoping that there's something I can do on my own if it turns out to be a simple issue.

About the only thing you can do on your own is shut the A/C/defrost off. It sounds like the compressor is knocking and that's going to set off a whole series of events and failures when it contaminates the system..
