2001 Taurus starting problems.
|
|
|
Once again my girl, 2001 Ford Taurus, 3.0 V6, "U" VIN, 135K miles, is having problems. I went to start it and it backfired, revved up to about 3500 and died. Every time I try and start it it revs up and sometimes will idle rough (below 1000), backfire and die. I started it again a few minutes ago and I pushed the gas pedal and it backfired again, remained running as long as I gave it fuel and the exhaust smoke was a brownish like the air mixture was too rich. It ran fine until I tried to start it again the next day. Any suggestions? It's bad enough I have a terrible flu, but now this? Please advise. Thanks.

Any trouble codes stored in the engine computer? Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

I'm not sure. I removed the ground from the battery for a bit and put it back to maybe reboot the computer, but it didn't help.

While we wait for you to get the codes scanned, I wanted to thank you for how you have phrased your initial post. You knew there was more than one engine for this, and were good enough to get the 8th digit of the VIN. You described very accurately yet without needless details what was happening. Aside from no code data, your post was very precise and to the point. Thank you very much for that. In the future, realize that unhooking the battery on newer cars isn't going to do what it did to pre-96 vehicles. On top of it, those codes and freeze-frame failure records that are stored can point towards the problem and should stay there until fixed. Just something to keep in mind. But thank you for the great job on posting your information. This really helps us help you.

No recent work had been done. I'm sorry, but my mind isn't working well right now. I have a case of the flu that is of Biblical proportions and sometimes, I just don't function correctly. Yes, there is/are codes. The check engine light came on and it was an O2 sensor. Sorry for forgetting. Thanks.

No idea of the code. I know that's a ton of help. I was just trying to get a ball park on what it may be. I'm pretty stupid about these things. Thanks for the well wishes.

Replaced the two top oxygen sensors and the problem has gone away.
