2002 Hyundai Elantra blown head gasket Sign In

My dad has a 2002 Hyundai Elantra with 44,000 miles on it. He is the original owner and takes good care of his car. He recently had a blown head gasket repaired on his car and the car has been running fine. He thinks that he should trade the car in because once you
have a blown head gasket repaired you will have more problems with the car. He is also concerned because the oil doesn't get dirty? he said that the oil should start changing color when it is time for an oil change. My dad is 86 and only uses the car for driving around town. Does not drive on the expressway and does not go on long trips. The dealer that he took his car to will give him 2000 as a trade in. He doesn't really want to buy a new car, but is afraid that if he doesn't trade it in now and something else goes wrong he won't get
anything for the car. I think that he should keep the car since it is running okay. But i'm not quite sure what he is talking about with the oil.

The fact that a head gasket was repaired is not reason to expect more problems. I would be more concerned about what trauma the car was put under for the gasket to blow in the first place. Was the engine overheated to the extreme?

The fact that the oil doesn't get dirty is a good thing, not a bad thing. It means the inside of the engine is clean and not full of sludge which is a real good thing.

My dad said the car didn't overheat. He said he felt like it was losing power and idling to fast. He was able to drive it home and then took it in the next day and they said he had a blown head gasket. The car has been running fine ever since and that was several months ago.

It is very rare for a head gasket to blow without heat. In the last 50 blown head gaskets I've seen, 49 were caused by extreme heat.

Well, you have to remember my dad is 86 and sometimes he has a hard time remembering things so it is possibly that the car overheated and he doesn't remember. I'm just going by what he is telling me what happened and relaying that information on this post. But, I appreciate your answer to my question and I did read your reply to my Dad and he has decided to keep the car. He agreed that since he isn't having any more problems with the car it should be okay. Thanks again for your reply to my question.
