2002 Monte Carlo intermittent starting

I haVe a 2002 Chevy Monte Carlo, 3.8 V6 with about 62,000 miles. Takes anywhere from 3 to 80 tries to start it. It does not make a clicking noise at all but a small hum when trying to start it. It has a new battery, and replaced started but that was not the problem. The other day, I disconnected the battery, reconnected and it started right up, 8 times in a row. An hour later would not start. Repeated mentioned steps, it again started. Next morning would not start, repeated steps and this time it did not start on the first try, it took about 40 tries to get it to start. At first I thought fuel pump, but it runs fine once I get it started. I would hate for it to be the central computer......ugh. Any suggestions? Thanks

I would pull codes to make sure there isn't any anti-theft issues going on, easy enough to do. Then when it's acting up get a test light or voltmeter and check the small trigger wire going to the solenoid of the starter to make sure it's supplying 12v when the key is turned to the start position (this test will require a helper) Depending on what the test results reveal will determine the next path to go down..........

A few people have said that it could be security system related, but didn't give me any suggestions. Thank you for yours....

One thing I forgot to ask was if the security light was flashing when you tried to start it......That would also be a indication something was going on with the anti-theft

It comes on but doesn't flash, see the thing that I don't understand is that it eventually will start. Just sometimes takes longer than other times. Thinking that if it was anti theft it wouldn't start at all..

Actually I doubt it's an anti-theft problem but pulling codes isn't hard to do and would help rule it out. There are a few thing it could be from a ign switch, neutral safety switch to a excessive corrosion in the starting circuit, that's what these basic tests will do, point you in the right direction. If you aren't getting power on the trigger wire, why would you voltage drop test the starter circuit? If you have excessive resistance on the starter circuit, why are you tracing down the trigger circuit? Now that I think about it I would probably drop the hush panel under the column and make sure there isn't any aftermarket system installed. You can usually tell aftermarket wiring from factory wiring, it's obvious..... I've had no starts on cars that customers swore they didn't have an aftermarket alarm systems on and the was the cause of the no start.........An aftermarket alarm system..... I might of missed it in your original post but the very 1st thing to do would be to test the battery and make sure those connections are clean & tight.... ********************** yea I thought I saw new battery but do make sure the terminals are free of corrosion and are tight........

Sidom is right. The Passlock system has nothing to do with the starter. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

I’m not saying that this issue has anything to do with the passlock system but I wanted to correct the misinformation that passlock doesn’t have anything to do with the starter system. This text was taken directly from GM Service information. Read the last line. I can post more text on this if required. Dan. Vehicle Theft Deterrent (VTD) Description and Operation Passlock™ System The theft deterrent system has been incorporated into the body control module (BCM). The theft deterrent system prevents the vehicle operation if the correct key is not used in order to start the vehicle. The ignition key turns the ignition lock cylinder. The cylinder rotation produces an analog voltage code in the Passlock™ sensor. This voltage code is received by the BCM. The BCM compares the voltage code to the previously learned voltage code. If the codes match, a class 2 message is sent from the BCM to the powertrain control module (PCM). The message enables the fuel injectors and the crank relay. Canadian "EH"

Wouldn't want that to slip by....... Since this vehicle is equipped with VTD and not just Passlock, Dan is correct. Passlock alone does not disable the starter but the VTD system does. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

ok, but then it shouldn't start at all should it? I am kind of thinking more of an ignition switch, or relay. This is a one owner car, right out of the factory into my hands. I have also noticed though a bogging down sometimes when driving it, like all of a sudden it loses gas briefly. Am just ticked off a bout the whole thing.......too many things it could be.
