Let me say first that I know very little about cars but I'm trying to change that. I have a 2002 Saturn sl. Car has 220 k but the engine was replaced before I bought it with about 175 k. It recently started idling low, rpms dropped when I started and stopped until I went to start it one day and kept dying and had to give it gas till it warmed up to get it home. I read to clean the throttle body and air intake control valve. So I gave it my best shot and it stopped dropping rpms and now idles really high, often over 2000 rpms. The rpms jump when it shifts and when I go to stop its difficult and pulls when it downshifts. Its an automatic. I read to pull the egr valve and clean it. I pulled it out once just to get familiar with it and put it back in and it solved the problem till I turned it off. Cleaned it and it helped but still goes back. I took it out again and put it back in without cleaning it and it helped but I'm sure it'll stop working properly. So, what am I dealing with? The service engine light has always been on but when we reset the CPU it went off and hasn't come back on for a week. Also scanned it and no codes came up. The pindle in the egr moves pretty good. Should I bite the bullet and buy a new egr? I'm wary because its $150 and would hate to spend that if its not the problem. Any advice from those who actually know what they're doing?

Also, after I put the egr back in and start it there will be a quick drop in rpms then it corrects itself. Does this relate to my earlier problem where I cleaned the IAC valve? Could it be bad? Sorry for the sense of urgency. I pick my son up every weekend and don't want to let him down if I can avoid it.

If the light came on since you cleared the codes, then there are stored codes that need to be read.

Check for vacuum leaks, it causes engine to run lean and raises rpms,
Also throttle body may be sticking, also intake gasket may be bad also.
