2003 Hyundai elantra broken flex pipe
|
|
|
I have a 2003 Hyundai Elantra GLS with 112K miles. I was told I need a new flex pipe and have been given prices from 150 to 700. From what i gather, I just need a new flex pipe soldered in I would like to buy the pipe myself and pay a mechanic to do the labor. The pipes are cheap ( I don't think I need the whole resonator assembly), but I need to know the length, diameter and other specs in order to but the right parts. Does anyone know the specs?Any help much appreciated

Forget buying it yourself. Just take it to a custom exhaust shop. They have them all right there and can fit it and weld it in place. The part is peanuts. It's the fitting and welding that you are paying for. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Heck you can buy the rear cat with the flex pipe and flange gaskets for around $230 and do it yourself. That's unless the fasteners are all rusted up. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

Most exhaust shops will weld in a flex for under $100 total.

The flex goes long before the pipe.

Thanks to all who responded. About 6 weeks ago I had my mechanic weld in a new flex pipe. THe car was much quieter. About 2 weeks later, my check engine light came on for the 1st time ( what prompted me to fix the flex pipe was the noise---no light had come on) I went to Auto zone who told me the code said flex pipe and 02 sensor--slow response???. they said before you do anything take it back and have your mechanic reset the computer. He did and the light went out. I was happy. then a few days ago it went on again. I went back to my mechanic he did the code and said I need 2 oxygen sensors but unless I am due for my emissions test that it does not have to be done right away. After he did this test, my light has gone out again. It just seems so coincidental that this happens after my flex pipe work. Could something have gotten jiggled around in there? Do you think I really need o2 sensors?? Help, I'm so confused!!! THe car is much quieter, but seems maybe just a tad loud on acceleration (I could be wrong about this)

Arggh. There is an O2 sensor right near that flex pipe. I can't know how well the repair went but probably needed the whole thing and a new O2 sensor while changing that out in the first place as just removing it could be a real problem and re-using it iffy depending. The bigger troubles are with the fasteners especially with rust area exposed vehicles. Not sure where the noise on acceleration is from and you aren't certain but bet the attempt to fix this without doing more failed. That's probably why you got such a range of repair costs to begin with. Rust belt exhaust work stinks and can mean the best fix is just do the whole system which is a judgement call by the tech looking at it then explaining that one bit might be fixable for now but expect to do it all now or bit by bit which ends up more in the long run, T

Thanks for your explanation. I guess for now I 'll just hope that the check engine light does not come on but I gather from your reply that it probably will. If it does, should I just get 1 new sensor and see what happens before I invest in another one. I'm not sure what they cost but my mechanic charges $20 labor for each one. The car has about 112K miles and money is tight so I'll be keeping it awhile. I guess I'll have to do it little by little (even though more expensive in the long run)

Pre cat O2 sensor should look like this......... Quick check shows these were under $100 ea. The issue is getting them out without wrecking threads of the pipe they are in. They wouldn't like super high heat such as torch (oxy/acet) can reach about 3,000F +/- if that much heat was near it for the flex pipe fix. I just can't say what happened with the fix but now it seems you have no light so code should go away if it's working now. There are two - one before and one after converter. The one before is critical to how the engine runs, the one after is checking that all things are fine if you will. Hard to say if while flex pipe was leaking if that harmed one or both alone or if the fix got some junk on either actually. They can clean up by themselves if a problem is no longer hurting them or not. There's no reason IMO to replace them if running well and no 'engine light' or codes. A problem I have (long retired) is the freaking things rust the wires where they are held in right at the sensors and if they fail you are screwed for a new one even if nothing was otherwise wrong. For right now with no code or lights for them and that noise is really harmless probably just let it be. Just know it could be an expense as cars will do anyway down the road and don't delay the fix. I hear you an many are here about money being tight. Same here sport. I have plenty of checks but the freaking bills keep coming with commas in the amount so about now you could use my butt cleavage as a nut cracker! Such is life, T
