2003 Mitsubishi Lancer - not starting

2003 Mitsubishi Lancer - not starting

I was on my way home and the car stalled. I attempted to start it and I could hear, what sounded like, the starter spinning but it wasn't engaging the flywheel. I got the car towed home and replaced the stater only to have the same thing happening. I called the tech support number that came with the new starter and did the volt tests going to the starter terminals and all seemed well. I took the starter back and had it bench tested and they said it failed the test. So I had them test the new one before leaving and after installing that one, it was still doing the same thing! I wanted to try and see what exactly was going on before taking another one back and whether or not there were any other tests I could try. The car has around 140K miles on it. I'm afraid that's not your starter. It sounds like the engine is cranking with no compression which can only mean it broke a timing belt and on that engine, that is terminal. When the belt breaks the valves stop in whatever position they were in but the pistons continue going up and down and that causes a collision with the pistons and valves, destroying the valves. Ah dang I was hoping it wasn't something too serious. I was able to take the top cover of the timing belt off and it looked like the top half was still there with no damage. It also had tension when I pressed against it. I wasn't able to see the bottom half as it was still covered, but do you still think it could be broken on the bottom part? I'm not too sure how to get full access to the belt without getting too involved with it. Not enough time in my days unfortunately.

It doesn't have to be totally broken. All it needs to do is sheer off a few of the cogs. If it jumps time at all it will bend valves. If one of the tensioner or idle pulleys let go, it will get loose enough to jump time. So I finally got back to it and this time I stuck my phone under the hood with the record on while I started it. Sure enough, the engine is cranking. The thing is probably done for with the amount of times I attempted to start it. I don't have the tools to do a compression test. Do you think it's still worth trying it? Maybe I should start looking for a new ride =\
