2004 Chevy Aveo Sign In

2004 Chevy Aveo 4 cyl 1.6L 35K miles....This started about 2-3 months ago. At first when i tried to turn my car on it wouldn't so I would try it the second time and it did. I didn't think of anything. About 4 weeks ago my "check engine" light came on right before vacation. I had the codes pulled; P2279 and P0172.For P2279-we found that the air intake hose has cracked in multiple places so i guess that's what that is all about i have to order that part and it will come in 3-4 days. As for P0172 Bank 1 Sensor 1--I guess this would be the O2 sensor which i guess it's dead b/c we took it off and the metal part is BLACK i mean BLACK as night...we went to the junk yard and took one off of an Aveo and it is just plain silver(not black) and put it on and turned the car on and tried to drive it but the car stalled and turned off so we ended up taking the "new from junk yard sensor" off and that metal part is black as night too...tried to turn it back on and it turned back on but when you turn it on it works funky sounds like it's accelerating and no one is touching the car...now it smells really bad like rotten eggs when it's on so i guess the catalytic converter is dead too?? The other thing that I have noticed when driving it is it has a hard time maybe to the point where it doesn't switch over to gear 2 from 1 at all. So now you can drive it for like 10 to 15 seconds and it stalls and turns off but turns right back on. Can anyone relate or help in any way?

Some guesses 4 u: The starter doing nothing if so is indicative of poor connections of either of both battery cables - both ends of each. Not sure what cable ends are at battery on this but they must be good. TMK it's not a GM car. If this can somehow totally and intermittently lose the battery funky stuff will happen, codes not totally dependable but can help a bit.

Neg cable off battery first and on last. Fix or replace cables as you see them. Good and well charged battery and cables or who knows what funky problems will happen. Start from there and if still troubles report back,

Brand new battery was put in May 2011. The cables are good. Changed the spark plugs and the cables just today. When the car is on it smalls really bad; like rotten eggs but there isn't any smoke or anything coming out of the muffler. I am not sure where to go from here.

There's a few things going on here at the same time. You don't know battery cables are good unless you fully checked them out so don't go there. Car can behave like no battery as per your description and those are one thing that can do that of many. New battery doesn't mean it's good.

Used O2 sensor? It probably was the result of poor running engine and threw a code but not the cause.

Check for excessive back pressure in exhaust as converter is probably junk and that's the smell. A new one would be junk in short order if you don't get the engine to run right first.

Just know codes are a direction of something wrong not the full diagnosis. Silly connection could be it and not sensors all over cars of the vintage.

At some point you will need a compression test despite low miles that if nothing found is in the cards,
