2004 Hyundai Elantra repair or replace? Sign In

Greetings!

My son has a 2004 Hyundai Elantra with 82,000 miles on it which he purchased used about a year and a half ago for $7000. Lately he's been having transmission issues, which the local shop diagnosed as "transmission slipping" and then "found vehicle to shift hard between 2nd and 3rd gear. shift solinod checks out ok at this time. internal transmission failure is most likely cause of this condition". Fixing this is estimated at $1800-$2800. The problem only happens in cold weather, and with this especially mild winter my son thought he could just live with this a while longer. Turning the car off and restarting it fixes it (temporarily), he says. (It doesn't seem to me like waiting to fix it will make it cost any less however.)

Meanwhile, they say the car also needs a new radiator and engine. My son says the heat hasn't been working in his car, but it hasn't been a big deal since he was only making very short trips. But he made a long one last weekend, and the engine overheated and he wound up having the car towed to the service station. These repairs are estimated to cost $2678.

Neither the boy nor I know much about cars, but it seems to me like that's an awful lot wrong and maybe he should be thinking about scrapping the car and getting a different one.

I would appreciate any advice. Thanks much.

Sue

You may end up having to now that he has severely overheated it. That will take out an engine in a heartbeat and it may have started with something as simple as a leaking hose.

Just curious, but what is being repaired or replaced for $2678? Does that include the transmission?

The 2678 is for the engine and radiator, not the transmission.

$2678 + $2800 = $5478

I think that you should look for another car. If you do go on another car search and you find one your interested in, have your mechanic check it over really good before buying.
