2004 Hyundai Sonata Problem Sign In

I have a 2004 Hyundai Sonata. It has about 120k miles on it. About 20 minutes into a 30 minute drive, it stopped running smoothly. The car would shake a little when I tried to go faster or when it seemed like it was trying to switch to higher gear. Anything above 45 mph really seemed to cause problems. Driving very slow or with foot off accelerator, it felt normal, but if I laid on the gas it got noisy and shaky again. In addition, when I was idling or going slow, the RPMs on the dash was fluctuating wildly and randomly even though it didn't feel like the engine was revving up at all.

I took it to the shop I usually take it to. They said the computer showed that the engine was misfiring or something. They thought the sparkplugs and wiring needed to be changed. They did this. I drove about 20 minutes home from the shop without any problems, and then it did the same exact thing again.

I was wondering if anyone had any ideas before I take it in again.

4 or 6 cylinder?

Do you know which misfire codes were stored? Could be a coil breaking down under load. A crank sensor getting ready to fail can also cause that sort of symptom also.

You'll need to scope the crank sensor and secondary ignition system to see what is going on.

Hyundai specifies that the timing belt on either of those engines should be replaced at the 60,000 mile mark. Both engines are interference, so you might want to consider that if you find that the crank sensor is causing your issue.

Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.
